Visa & entry
Check your entry route before you travel.
A practical visa and entry checklist for a planned hospital visit in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou or Shenzhen. Your nationality, residence, travel purpose and itinerary determine what you need to confirm.
Information reviewed 18 October 2026. Requirements can change. This page is general planning information, not an eligibility decision or a substitute for instructions from the authority handling your application.
Start with your actual reason for travel
Tell the Chinese embassy, consulate or authorised visa centre responsible for your application that the main purpose is planned medical care, if that is the case. Ask which category and documents apply to your nationality, residence, visit length and accompanying family. Do not select tourism or business simply because it seems easier.
Is there a medical-treatment visa?
Some consular instructions address short-term medical treatment under S2 private affairs. For example, the Chinese Embassy in Iran lists hospital-issued supporting documents under S2 medical treatment. That is a local example, not a universal checklist: the responsible consular post determines the appropriate route and requirements for your application.
Visa-free entry is not one universal rule
Unilateral exemptions, bilateral agreements and regional policies have different conditions. The NIA's unilateral-exemption summary lists specified purposes such as tourism, business and visits; do not assume it covers a trip whose main purpose is treatment. Ask the responsible authority to confirm your case. Hainan's regional medical-visit exemption does not itself grant that same permission for Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou or Shenzhen.
Transit is a separate route
The NIA's 240-hour transit policy has eligible-nationality, port, permitted-area and onward-travel conditions, including travel to a third country or region. It is not a general medical-stay permission. Check eligibility and whether your intended activity is allowed before relying on it; a hospital booking does not establish eligibility.
Prepare a case-specific checklist
Ask your application authority what is needed before paying for travel. The following are questions to clarify, not a substitute for its document list.
- Which passport validity, application form, photograph and residence evidence are required?
- Does the hospital need to issue an invitation, acceptance or appointment document, and what must it contain?
- Are proposed dates, funding evidence or accommodation details required?
- Which separate application and relationship documents are needed for a companion?
- What stay length and number of entries will cover the proposed visit, and what happens if plans change?
What our team can help with
We can help organise practical questions and coordinate a request for hospital documents where the hospital agrees. Only the relevant issuer can provide its official documents. We do not issue visas, determine eligibility, promise approval, or offer immigration legal advice. Any paid document coordination is separately scoped; government and visa-centre fees are separate.
Before you send anything
Your first enquiry can state your nationality, country of residence, intended city and approximate dates without passport numbers or medical records. Do not send passport scans or medical files through our email or WeChat. A suitable secure process must be agreed before any sensitive documents are handled. Recheck official rules before applying and before travel.
